LOS ANGELES--- Two lost hikers who survived three nights in mountains thanks to supplies at a campsite of another hiker who disappeared last year described their suffering, saying they had “the real special thank” for the man who is probably dead.

The couple, Allen, 24, and Brandon Day, 28, were in Southern California for an important conference. They got lost on Saturday west of Palm Springs after wandering off a trail during what was supposed to be a day hike.

Prepared only for a brief hike, they wore light jackets and tennis shoes and had no food, spare clothing or cell phone. With night closing in, they took shelter in a small cave and spent the night sleepless, freezing and hungry.

On Monday, they discovered a campsite in a deadend valley. There was a sleeping mat a backpack, a disposable razor(一次性剃刀), a spoon and tennis shoes. Day and Allen were delighted, thinking someone there could help them find the way out. But later they realized the place was deserted.

They found identification showing the camper was Donovan, 60, a retired social worker from Virginia. They learned later in his journey that he was an experienced hiker and he disappeared on May 2, 2005, in icy weather.

They hound articles in his backpack: a warm sweater for Allen, dry socks for Day and matches. They lit a small signal fire to attract a helicopter crew in the distance, but the crew did not see them.

On Tuesday morning, Day created “ a really big smoke signal” that finally attracted a helicopter crew. They were examined at a hospital and had only bruises.

“We feel great. We’re thankful. We feel like we’ve been given a second chance,” said Day, who expressed that they didn’t give up hiking even after this experience.

A lot of people are familiar with the story of Brave Gelert, a dog that faithfully defended the prince’s son, but which was then killed while it was fast asleep through a terrible misunderstanding. However, only a few people know that the story is really a pack of lies. Let me explain.

About a hundred or so years ago there was a hotel owner in Wales who was fed up with business being so bad. His hotel was stuck in the middle of nowhere and hardly anyone came to stay. Then, one day, he had an idea. A famous prince called Llewellyn had lived in the area during the Middle Ages and had been keen on dogs. This is hardly surprising as hunting was extremely popular at that time. So what he did was to make up the story of the brave and faithful Gelert and how he had been killed by his ungrateful master.

Of course, people would be far more likely to believe the story if there was something they could see. So one day, the hotel keeper went to the top of a high hill and built a sort of monument from the stones he found lying around. A friend of his, who was an accountant, helped him to construct it . The “tale” soon caught on and developed a life of its own. Afterwards, people came from far and wide to see the spot where the dog was buried. Needless to say, business became very good for the hotel owner.

54. According to the tale, the dog was killed by ___.

A. a hotel owner     B. a famous accountant

C. its master        D. the prince’s son

55. The owner of the hotel successfully improved his business by ___.

A. making up a story                    B. constructing a hotel on the hill

C. showing people around his hotel       D. inviting a friend to help him

56. The hotel owner built the stone monument in order to__________.

A. make more money     B. remember the loyal dog

C. show off     D. honor the prince

57. What could be the best title for this passage?

A. A Prince and His Dog          B. A Profit - Making Lie

C. A Magnificent Hotel           D. A Faithful but Unlucky Dog

People often talk as if shyness is a disease or mental condition that can be cured. I prefer to think of it as an emotional disability. It’s something we are born with and something we carry with us in our entire lives. There are too many people, however, who seem to be determined to find some way of doing away with their shyness. In my opinion, it’s a waste of time. I don’t mean that we should do nothing about it; quite the contrary, I think we need to separate the basic fact of our shyness from our ability to take part in a social environment.

Look at one of the most famous shy people of them all, Johnny Carson. This man is painfully shy, yet for decades he made a living talking and associating(交往) with different people every night, in front of a national audience. Carson has never done away with his shyness, but he has successfully found a way to deal with it to the extent that he could be, not just a talk show host, but a legend (传奇) among talk show hosts. Look also at Sally Fields, who has recently admitted her problem with shyness. This is a woman who has appeared in many films, TV shows and interviews, yet in her early years she was so shy that she turned down a lunch invitation from Jane Fonda because she was terribly afraid of meeting her.

I guess that our shyness is there because each of us is born with some insecurity(不安全感)and this insecurity prevents us from reaching out to others the way people with a more open personality do. As we grow up and become adults, we allow our social skills to grow and develop. But we are still stuck in kindergarten or elementary school or wherever it was when our shyness took root in our soul.

58. In the author’s view, shyness can be explained as ________.

A. a disease that can be easily cured          B. a not very normal mental condition

C. an emotional disability                      D. something we pick up after birth

59. Which of the following is TRUE of Johnny Carson?

A. He has dealt with shyness very successfully.

B. He has done away with his shyness carefully.

C. He is described as a hero in some legend books.

D. He failed to become a good talk show host.

60. The passage tells us that Sally Fields was ________.

A. proud all the time              B. impolite when young

C. shy in her early years              D. close to Jane Fonda

61. The author thinks that our shyness is there because ________.

A. we are not open enough.

B. we don’t feel secure at heart.

C. we try to reach out to others all the time

D. we lack certain social skills.

D

Language as a System of Symbols

Of all systems of symbols (符号), language is the most highly developed. It has been pointed out that human beings, by agreement, can make anything stand for anything. Human beings have agreed, in the course of centuries of mutual (相互的)dependency, to let the various noises that they can produce with their lungs, throats, tongues, teeth, and lips systematically stand for certain happenings in their nervous systems. We call that system of agreements language.

There is no necessary connection between the symbol and that which it stands for. Just as social positions can be symbolized by feathers worn on the head, by gold on the watch chain, or by a thousand other things according to the culture we live in, so the fact of being hungry can be symbolized by a thousand different noises according to the culture we live in.

However obvious these facts may appear at first glance, they are actually not so obvious as they seem except when we take special pains to think about the subject. Symbols and the things they stand for are independent of each other, yet we all have a way of feeling as if, and sometimes acting as if, there were necessary connections. For example, there are people who feel that foreign languages are unreasonable by nature: foreigners have such funny names for things, and why can’t they call things by their right names? This feeling exhibits itself most strongly in those English and American tourists who seem to believe that they can make the natives of any country understand English if they shout loud enough. Like the little boy who is reported to have said: “Pigs are called pigs because they are such dirty animals,” they feel that the symbol is inherently (内在地) connected in some way with the things symbolized.

62. Language is a highly developed system of symbols because human beings _________.

A. have made use of language for centuries

C. have made various noises stand for any events

D. can make anything stand for anything by agreement

63. What can we conclude from Paragraph 2?

A. Different noises may mean different things.

B. Our culture determines what a symbol stands for.

C. The language we use symbolizes our social positions.

D. Our social positions determine the way we are dressed.

64. In Paragraph 3, “take special pains” probably means “_________”.

A. try very hard       B. take our time

C. are very unhappy       D. feel especially painful

65. The example of the little boy is used to show that _________.

A. adults often learn from their young
