On each Christmas night, our whole family get together and enjoy a visit from Santa.
The Christmas of 2005, my youngest son, Matthew was two. When Santa arrived, Matthew sat on Santa’s lap for the rest of the evening. We took many pictures with them.
None of us knew how precious (珍贵的) those photos with Santa and Matthew would become. Five days after Christmas, Matthew died in an accident. When the next Christmas was coming, it was hard for me to get into the holiday spirit. On December 13th, something special happened to raise our spirits.
We were just finishing dinner when we heard a knock on the front door. When we went to answer it, no one was there. However, there was a card and a gift. We opened the card and read that the gift-giver wanted to keep it a secret; he or she just wanted to help us get through a hard time by cheering us up.
In the gift bag was a cassette (录音带盒) of favorite Christmas music. We thought that it was a very clever gift, and it touched our hearts. We listened to the songs one by one, and the spirit of Christmas began to warm our hearts.
Then we received one gift for each day until Christmas. We were interested in what would possibly come next.

It was 8:30am and the doorbell rang. I answered the door and there was Mr. Jones, who was from a bike-racing company. Mr. Jones said, “Congratulations! You are one of our finalists for this year’s US Bike Tour Challenge. If you can ride your bike from here to Miami, Florida and finish it first, you will win $50,000. You can only take ten stops on this race and this doesn’t include overnight stays at hotels. Will you accept this challenge, Mr. Wozniak?” I agreed, and so did my parents.
Mr. Jones explained to me the rules. The race began the next day. The first day was very smooth for me. But unluckily the next four days, I bumped into some rain, which didn’t stop until I reached North Carolina. And I had used six stops because of the bad weather. It would take five days to get to Florida, so I would travel one day without making a stop. And I did it. On the sixth day, I succeeded in making it all the way to Savannah Georgia without a stop. Four days later, I arrived in downtown Miami and I was informed that I was in the 4th place. So I thought to myself I could win. At 6:15pm, I found myself head to head with another racer. We both switched gears to head for the finish line.
When the officials announced, “The Ohio competitor, Evan Wozniak, is the winner!” I was so excited that I fell off my bike. Happily I got the $50,000 for winning this race. And I did it in ten days.

The maid (女佣) at the Kingsgate Hotel in Abu Dhabi had done even more than my mother. Every article of clothing had either been placed on a coat hanger or folded neatly, even the socks.
I thanked Agnes, gave her a generous tip and went about my business. Late that evening, when I returned from work, a shiny new alarm clock was on the bedside table. As I had asked the maid for the time of day, I knew right away what had happened. She had used some of the money I had given her to buy the clock.
A few months later, I returned to my hotel room to find a hand-made birthday card signed by Agnes. I wondered for a few minutes how she knew, and then guessed that she had come across my passport while cleaning. Correctly, it turned out to be so.
Someone would say that she was doing this just to get another tip. I prefer to believe it is simply being kind — one human being connecting with another.
I still remember a story which was worth telling whenever police officers are maligned for abusing (滥用) their powers. One day I took a cab back from Dubai with only Dh140 in my pocket, knowing we would have to stop at an ATM machine to get the rest of the fare. After four cash machines indicated that the network was down, the cab driver brought me to the police office. After listening to both sides, the officer paid the cab driver the Dh120 owed. When I tried to insist on paying him back the next day, he waved me off, telling me not to worry about it.
43. According to the text, we can know Agnes ______.

46. What would be the best title of the text?
A. My favorite maidB. An unexpected birthday card

Scientists have discovered a new monkey in Brazil. The little mammal is about the size of a squirrel. The monkey’s fur is mostly gray and brown and it has a very long tail (尾巴). The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) reported the monkey discovery. The group says that finding new types of mammals is quite rare. “We keep finding new types of plants, insects, and butterflies,” said Avecita Chicchon, an official of the WCS. “But it is more and more difficult to find new types of mammals.”
Scientists found the little monkey in the rain forests located in the Brazilian state of Amazonas. The monkey has been named Mura’s saddleback tamarin. Scientists named it after the Mura Indian tribe (部落), whose members also live in the rain forests of Brazil.
“This newly described monkey shows that even today, there are still major wild-life discoveries to be made,” said Fabio Rohe, who led the team that found the new monkey. “This discovery should serve as a wake-up call that there is still much to learn from the world’s wild places.”
Scientists aren’t yet sure how many saddleback tamarins make their homes in the area. But they may have to do their work fast. The living area of tamarins is reducing because of deforestation (砍伐森林). Deforestation happens when trees are cut down and land is cleared for building projects.
People who work to protect natural resources are anxious about the effects of deforestation on Brazilian rain forests. They are most concerned about a huge highway that cuts through the area where the little monkeys were discovered. There are also plans to build two dams and a gas pipeline in the same region.
47. The new monkey was named after ______.
A. the scientist who discovered the new kind of mammal
B. the Mura Indian tribe living in the rain forests of Brazil
C. the team that researched monkeys in the rain forests
D. the rain forests in Amazonas where it was discovered
48. We can learn from the text that the scientists ______.
A. found a new monkey with gray and brown fur and a short tail
B. knew the number of little monkeys living in the rain forests of Brazil
C. believed the rain forests are full of undiscovered plants and animals
D. had not found any new types of plants or insects for many years
49. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that building projects in Brazilian rain forests ______.
A. may have a bad effect on the environment
B. helps scientists discover more rare wildlife
C. will improve the local economy
D. costs the local people a lot of money
50. We would probably read this text in a (n) ______.
A. science-fiction magazineB. advertisement poster
C. discovery magazine D. traveling journal
四、任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。
注意:每个空格只填1个单词。
Success is within the reach of all of us, but not most of us can reach it despite hard work. However, self-help is a good way of achieving success. All you have to do is help yourself in reaching your goals (目标).
The first step is setting your goals. You can have greater success if you have a set goal. Setting a goal and taking steps or actions towards your goal will make you come closer and closer to your goal every time you take a step towards it.
Gaining knowledge about your field (领域) of activity will make you more confident. Studying all publications (出版物) about the field, talking with other people in the same subject and exchanging ideas with them will help you gain more knowledge about the field. Knowledge and success are directly linked with each other and if you have knowledge about your field, you’ll seldom fail in your attempts (尝试) at success.
Another important tip is to learn from your failed attempts. If you fail in any of your attempts, it isn’t wise to give up making attempts. Instead, you should make failure your experience and analyze (分析) what went wrong. Try to correct your mistakes and take another attempt and you’ll find that you’re close to your goal.
Doing what you love to do is a stepping stone to your success. If you’re doing something that doesn’t interest you, you may not be able to put all your heart into your work and thus may not be able to achieve success.
Therefore, it can be concluded that whether you’ll be able to achieve success or not lies in the hands of your own.
