◆delay v. & n.
1. 用作动词,表示“推迟”、“耽误”、“延误”等,其后可接名词或动名词作宾语,但一般不接不定式(偶尔可见,学生不宜用)。如:
We decided to delay (going on) our holiday till [until, to] next month. 我们决定把假期推迟到下个月。
注:有时用作不及物动词。如:
It’s getting late. Don’t delay. 很晚了,别耽搁了。
He delayed in answering the letter. 他推迟回信。
2. 用作名词,表示“耽误”、“延期”等,可用作可数或不可数名词。如:
We must leave without delay. 我们必须马上离开。
There was a delay of two hours before the plane took off. 飞机起飞推迟了两小时。
比较正误句型(注意正确句型 delay in doing sth):
这就是我推迟动身的原因。
误:That is the reason of my delay to leave.

◆delight n. & v.
1. 用作名词时,表示具体意义的“乐事”,是可数名词;表示抽象意义的“快乐”、“高兴”等,是不可数名词。如:
Travelling is a great delight. 旅行是一件令人愉快的事。
Music gives delight to many people. 音乐给许多人以享受。
To our great delight, the day turned out fine. 使我们高兴的是天气转晴了。
用于短语 take (a) delight in(其中的冠词通常省略)。如:
He takes great delight in painting. 他爱好画画。
2. 用作动词,通常为及物动词,且常用过去分词作表语,比较:
I’m delighted at [b] your success. 我对你的成功感到高兴。
I’m delighted to hear your success. 我听到你成功的消息感到高兴。
I’m delighted that you have succeeded. 你获得成功我感到很高兴。
注:be delighted 后除接介词 at, by 外,还通常接 with。如:

3. delighted 意为“感到高兴的”,若要表示“使人高兴的”,不用 delighting, 而用 delightful。如:

◆demand n. & v.
1. 用作名词,意为“要求”、“需求”,注意以下与介词的习惯搭配:
These goods are in good demand. 这些货物销量很大。
There is a great demand for these goods. 对这些货物的需求量很大。
She is in great demand as a singer. 作为歌后很受欢迎。
I have many demands on my money [purse]. 我有许多地方要花钱。D22
2. 用作动词,意为“要求”、“需求”,通常为及物动词,其宾语可以是名词、不定式、that 从句(从句谓语通常为虚拟的)。如:
He demanaded an immediate answer. /He demanded to get an immediate answer. 他要求马上得到答复。
He demanded to be told everything. /He demanded that he (should) be told everything. 他要求把一切都告诉他。
注:demand可后接不定式,但通常不接不定式的复合结构,若意义上需要这类结构,可换成 that 从句或在 demand 后接 of。如:
他要求她同我们一起去。
误:He demanded her to go with us.
正:He demanded that she (should) go with us.
正:He demanded of her to go with us.
3. 表示“向某人要求某物”,可用 demand sth of [from] sb。如:
He demanded too high a price of me. 他向我要价太高。
He demanded an apology from the boss. 他要求老板道歉。
