For a long tie now, I've been fascinated by coon phrases and their origins- and just why we say what we say. I decided to consult the experts, sort through all the research and copile (编写) the answers. Here are a few of the standouts.
Q: Why do we“tie the knot (结)”when we get arried?
A: Knots have been a coon etaphor in arriage cereonies all over the world and through tie. The expression eans“to unite in anage”. In the Hindu arriage cereony, the groo ties a ribbon around the bride's neck. In ancient Roe, the bride wore a belt that was tied in a knot. The groo would then unfasten it on their first night together as husband and wife.
Q: Why do we say“any happy returns”?
A: The phrase is short for“any happy returns of the day”, which is to say,“ay this day return any ties”or“ay you have any ore birt hdays. ”
Q: How about“I t's not over till the fat lady sings”? Where does that coe fro?
A: This expression is usually phrased as“The opera isn't over till the fat lady sings. ”It got its start as a popular saying when it was used by the San Antonio Express-News sportswriter Dan Cook in 1976 to indicate that a sporting contest wouldn't end until tie was called.
Q: What's the story of“under the weather,”especially when the weather’s just fine?
A: There's probably a nautical (航海的) explanation. In days gone by, when people felt seasick, they were told to go below-decks and find a spot in the iddle of the ship where the otion would be less noticeable. In that way, they literally took theselves“under the weather.”

In 1900, English archaeologist Arthur Evans discovered the ruins of a royal palace at Knossos on the north coast of Crete. He linked the palace to the ancient Cretan King inos, fro whose nae he invented the ter“inoan”. We don't knohat these people called theselves. We know of the inoans only through their ruins. What we know of inoan history is nothing ore than a good guess, and good guesses are, I should warn, likely to be wrong.
The archaeological evidence points to only a few reasonable facts about inoan civilization. Around 3,000 BC, Crete was settled by a people who probably cae fro Asia inor (小亚细亚), who, by 2,000 BC, was already living in cities, trading with other nations around the editerranean and using pictographs. They built agnificent palace centers at Knossos, Phaistos and Kato Zakros. We have no idea what language they spoke exactly, but they certainly spoke a non-Hellenic language (that is a language not closely related to Greek) and probably spoke a non-Indo- European language.
The inoans were a great coercial people and their trade was widespread. The Egyptians were highly failiar with the Cretans, who even appeared in Egyptian art. Cretan artifacts, the objects that were ade in
the past and are historically iportant, turned up all over Asia inor, and they seeed to have been involved in trade with the tribes living on the Greek ainland.
All of these trade acti vities produced great wealth for the Cretans, which went into agnificent building projects and technological developent. The Cretans seeed to be the only people in the ancient world that would ake ulti-roo buildings. The Cretans were the first to build plubing syste (管路系统) in their buildings. And Cretan society sees to be the first“leisure (休闲)”society in existence, in which a large part of huan activities focused on leisure activities, such as sports. The ost popular sports were boxing and bull-juping. Woen actively took part in both of these sports.

注意:每个空格只填一个单词。
We all know the expression“To err is huan. ”And this is true enough. Here are three, along with ways to avoid aking th e in the first place.
1. We ake slips of the tongue.
There is a istake ade by people of all ages and cultures: We fail to coe up with the nae of a person we know or even we recall the person by the wrong nae. When a proper nae is on the tip of our tongues, we can usually recall soe of the inforation we need. For instance, people can often guess the nae's first letter. Also , recall of the right nae is often replaced by a wrong nae. But the wrong nae often has the sae eaning as the right nae.
2. When we do different tasks at the sae tie, we get stupid.
The brain slows down when it has to juggle tasks. Switching fro task to task creates other probles. We can forget what we were doing or planned to do. The to-do list in our brains is known as working eory, but he contents of our working eory can evaporate (蒸发) like water in a desert; after only about two seconds, things begin to disappear.
3. We think we're better than we are.
ost of us hate to think of ourselves as average, or below average. So we walk around with this private conceit that we're above average, and there lies the seed of any of our istakes.
Soething should be done to avoid the above istake.
1. Think in a different way. Habit is a great friend, saving us tie and ental effort. But it can kill our ability to see through new situations. After awhile, we see only what we expect to see.
2. Slow down. ultitasking(多重任务处理) can cause our error rate to go up, as our attention becoes divided. It akes sense to slow down and do things one at a tie. The slower way ay actually be ore efficient in the long run.
3. Don't ake decisions until you're in a better ood. Good feelings increase the tendency to cobine aterial in neays and see relatedness between things. Happy people tend to be ore creative and less prone to errors.
