Bn the 1960s, many young Americans were dissatisfied with American society. They wanted to end the Vietnam War and to make all of the people in the U.S. equal. Some of them decided to “drop out” of American society and form their own societies. They formed utopian communities, which they called “communes(公社),” where they could follow their philosophy of “do your own thing”. A group of artists founded a commune in southern Colorado called “Drop City”. Following the ideas of philosopher and architect Buckminster Fuller, they built dome-shaped(圆顶形) houses from pieces of old cars. The Hog Farm become famous when they helped organize the Woodstock Rock Festival in 1969. The followers of Steve Gaskin tried to settle down on a farm in Tennessee, but they had to leave when some members of the group were arrested for growingmarijuana( *** ).
Not all communes believed in the philosophy of “do your own thing”, however. Twin Oaks, a commune founded in Virginia in the late 1960s, was based on the ideas of psychologist B. F. Skinner. The people who lived at Twin Oaks were carefully controlled by Skinner’s conditioning techniques to do things that were good for the community. In 1972, Italian architect Paolo Soleri began to build Arcosanti, a utopian city in Arizona, where 2500 people will live closely together in one large building called an “archology”. Soleri believes that people must live

DGetting sick overseas can be scary. You’re in an unfamiliar place and often don’t speak the language. Although each trp is different, there are universal things you can do to keep safe.
Be prepared. “Schedule a visit with a doctor who specializes in travel or the area you’re visiting at least four weeks before your departure,” says WHO public health expert Dr. Gilles Poumerol. A travel doc
tor will be able to give you the required and recommended vaccinations(接种疫苗) as well as discuss any medical issues you may come across abroad.
Get insurance. “In many countries where you have limited access to health care, good health care is only found in the private sector and can be very expensive,” Dr. Poumerol says. Plus, in an emergency, returning to the United States can cost more than $50,000. Ask your health insurance company whether your policy applies overseas and whether it will cover trips to a foreign hospital. If not, there are many companies that offer short-term travel health insurance for a reasonable fee. A list can be found on the US State Department’s travel website.
Pack well. Dr. Poumerol also suggests bringing a note from your doctor in English and the language of the country you’re visiting. Packing an emergency contact list is important. Contacts should include the local embassy(使馆), relatives who should be informed if you get sick and your health insurance company.
Be care. You have to be in charge of your health. If you’re being treated abroad, question the medical staff about their sterilization(杀菌) practices; injection (注射) equipment should be put in boiling water for at least 30 minutes or used only once. Also be sure that doctors and nurses are wearing gloves to prevent fluid transfer. Limiting your alcohol intake will keep you focused on your safety. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, in 1994, recognized October 5 as World Teachers’ Day. It aims to honor the contributions teachers make to education. According to UNESCO, over 100 countries celebrate World Teachers’ Day at present. World Teachers’ Day is celebrated in many ways. These have included ceremonies, concerts, competitions, extra training meetings for teachers and cultural and sports events.
However, many countries have their own Teachers’ Day. In some countries, the gratitude to teachers is expressed on a day with a different name. For example, in Bulgaria, teachers are honored on “Education Day”. In China, September 28, the date of Confucius birth(孔子诞辰), was once chosen as Teachers’ Day. Confucius was the model master educator in ancient China. People often use the day to express their thankfulness to their teachers, such as paying them a visit or sending them a card, to honor teachers’ contributions not only to their students but also to society in general. In 1985, the date was changed to September 10. In America, it was until 1980 that Congress declared a National Teacher Day.
In 1985, the Parent-Teacher Association made National Teacher Week as the first full week of May. It has been celebrated every year since. Students can bring special gifts to their favorite teachers.
